What is Gender Neutral fashion and what does it mean exactly?
Fashion has always been a way to express yourself, but also to protect our body from external influences? It’s mainly made out of clothing and footwear. Since mankind evolved and fashion became more a way to send a message about our personality or sexuality, clothing or shoes were divided into male and female looks and sizing systems. In the past years, there’s been a big move toward unisex or gender-neutral clothing. These clothes in the gender neutral or unisex collections that brands are launching are not restricted to certain colors and fit separate for girls, boys, men, and women. They are “genderless” in that the fashion is fluid, not inherently masculine or feminine, and the styles can fit all body types. This counts for clothes like underwear, shirts, pants, sportswear, and shoes
What is a Gender Neutral size and how does it work?
As stated in the previous paragraph: “the styles can fit all body types”. That’s where body measurements and size charts come in. What does unisex or gender-neutral sizes mean? The term unisex is a bit confusing when you try to select the best size shoes, t-shirts, knickers or hoodies. A unisex product can be worn by a man or a woman. Gender-neutral garments are sized based on men’s measurements.
TIP: When ordering gender-neutral fashion products for women, it’s best to order a size smaller. For example, a woman that typically wears a medium should order a small unisex garment.
How to know your Gender Neutral size?
Like in the hundreds of size-charts on this website, it all starts with measuring and knowing your body size. All you need to know about body measurements and body types for clothing you can read here. How to exactly measure your feet for the perfect shoe size has its own post here
Measuring your body for clothing size
- Chest: When getting fitted for a shirt, getting the chest measurement is crucial. You’ll need a tape measure to accomplish this. Put a tape measure over the broadest region of your chest under your arms.
- Neck: To take neck measures, wrap the measuring tape around in the center of your neck. Leave the tape a bit loose (1 finger) to get a more comfortable fit, remember to keep the tape horizontal to avoid errors.
- Arm Length: Arm measurement is also crucial. Place your hand on your hip and bend your elbow 90 degrees. Place the soft tape measure in the middle of your neck. Measure your shoulder to your elbow and down to your wrist. Your sleeve length is the whole length.
- Size Waist: Waist measurements are crucial when getting fitted for a bottom (pants, jeans, skirts, boxers, etc.). To find your waist measurement, measure around your natural waistline with the tape a little loose.
- Hip: For women’s bottoms, hip measurements are important. Measure around the broadest area of your hips while standing with your feet together.
- Rise measurements: This determines the length of the bottoms, especially for long jeans and pants. Rise measure from the top of the waistband to the leg seam to get the rise measurement.
- Bust size: Wrap the soft measuring tape around the widest part of your breast. That’s your bust size (or band size)
