What is the carry-on weight limit for Qantas?

Qantas allows different carry-on weights depending on the class of travel and your travel destination. The Australian domestic Dash-8 fleet allows passengers to bring on board baggage of up to 7kgs. This baggage allowance applies to all classes and was put in place due to the small size of the overhead lockers. Australian domestic flights, besides the Dash-8, allow a baggage weight of up to 10kgs. While bag sizes differ, their weight should not exceed the weight restriction. This strict measure applies to all classes of travel.

The passenger is allowed to bring on board one wheelie bag and a small backpack, both of which should not exceed 14kgs in total. The passenger will be required to hand over their wheelie bag to the baggage handlers who will carry it on board for them. Frequent flyers with Qantas get to enjoy an additional baggage allowance free of charge; frequenters whose flights are either operated by the QantasLink (with a QF flight number) or by Emirates and have an EK or QF number when booking. These flights only operate within Australia, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North Africa, and New Zealand.

Note that the baggage allowance for frequent flyers is only eligible for flights operated by Qantas, QantasLink, and Emirates. Bringing more baggage when using other flights will attract fines. To be safe, check with the baggage policy for whichever flight you use.

Baggage allowances for Qantas international travels

Adults have a 30kgs (66lb) baggage allowance for economy class, 40kgs (88lb) for premium economy and business class, and 50kgs (110lb) for the first class.
Silver Qantas Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members can carry on board 42kgs (92lb) for economy class. Premium economy and business class passengers can bring up to 52kgs (114lb) while first-class passengers have up to 62kgs (136lb) of baggage weight.
Gold Qantas Frequent Flyers have an additional baggage allowance. 46kgs (101lb) for economy class, 56kgs (123lb) for premium economy and business classes, and 66kgs (146lb).
Platinum Qantas Frequent Flyers’ baggage allowance goes up to 50kgs (110lb) for economy class, 60kgs (132lb) for premium economy and business classes, and 70kgs (154lb) for first-class passengers.

Note that the above baggage allowance applies to all international flights apart from North and South America. If traveling from or to the Americas, your baggage allowance will be determined by the carrier whose flight number appears on your ticket.

Their baggage policy will take effect on all your flights to your destination. Persons with a disability traveling to or from the USA or Canada are allowed to carry on their mobility aids (which are not included in their baggage allowance).

Economy class passengers are confined to bringing one bag with a maximum weight of 32kgs (70lb). Premium economy and business class passengers can have 2 bags, each weighing 32kgs at most. First class passengers have the leeway of having 3 checked bags, each weighing 32kgs as well.
Qantas Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members viz-a-viz the classes of service for travels to and from the Americas:
Silver and Gold Qantas Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members have a luggage size of 3 checked bags each 32kgs at most for all classes.

Luggage allowance for Australian domestic travels

Qantas Airways flights allow one piece of baggage of a maximum of 23kgs (50lb) for economy class and 2 bags of a maximum of 32kgs (70lb) each for business class. The same policy applies to Qantas Club members and Silver Qantas Frequent Flyers.
Gold Qantas, Platinum, and Platinum One Frequent Flyers can carry 2 pieces of baggage each 32kgs at most for both economy and business classes.

What are the exceptions?

A third option; One 105cm bag that’s not any bigger than 48cm x 43cm x 23cm and one smaller 185cm bag that’s soft-cased. The latter’s dimensions should be 60cm x 11cm x 114cm or smaller. Both bags should weigh 14 kg in total.

Economy class passengers have two options:

1 x 115cm bag whose dimensions must not exceed 56cm x 36cm x 23cm and a maximum weight of 7kgs.
1 x 185cm bag with 60cm x 11cm x 114cm garment bag that weighs 7kgs at most.

Additionally, you may be allowed to carry on board a small handbag, laptop bag, jacket, or camera bag among other duty-free personal items. Get a slim laptop bag so that it’s considered a personal item. Otherwise, a big laptop bag will be included in your weight allowance.
