Checked Bag Allowances

If you frequently travel to different places all over the world, you probably know that Emirates flights offer the largest baggage allowances among world-class airlines. The number of bags you have and their total weight, also known as the piece and weight concept, determine your free baggage allowance.
You’ll have to consider your baggage weight for most flights but the number of pieces you can carry is only restricted for flights to and from Africa and the Americas. Your travel route, fare, and a class of travel will also affect your baggage restrictions.
To afford additional baggage allowance, you need to be a member of Emirates Skywards Platinum, Gold, or Silver. You can customize your Emirates experience by managing your booking according to your needs.
1. Checked Baggage Allowance for All Routes Except the Americas and Africa
Every route except flights to and from Africa and the Americas is subject to the weight concept. The total weight of your baggage determines the number of bags you can take. Each travel class has a unique weight limit allowing you to check as many bags as possible within the weight allowance.
In Economy Class, the type of ticket you choose has a bearing on the total weight of your baggage.
Here’s a quick overview of the weight concept in Economy Class flights according to the type of ticket:
- Economy Special – 20 kg
- Economy Saver – 25 kg
- Economy Flex – 30 kg
- Economy Flex Plus -35 kg
If you are flying Economy Special between UAE and India, you can carry up to 25 kg of luggage. Flights from New Zealand and Australia on Economy Saver tickets also allow up to 30 kg of checked bags.
Business Class and First Class flights have the most generous allowances of 40 kg and 50 kg respectively.
Every checked bag for flights using the weight concept should not go beyond 300 cm (118 inches) in total dimensions. You can calculate the total dimensions of your bag by adding the height, length, and width measurements. If your bag surpasses this size limit, it’ll not be considered checked luggage.
For flights through Dammam International Airport, each bag must have a maximum size of 215 cm (84.64 inches).
2. Checked Baggage Allowance for Flights to and From the Americas and Africa
When flying to and from Africa and the Americas using Emirates Airlines, your baggage allowance is subject to the piece concept. This means that there is a limited number of checked bags you can freely carry and each has a weight restriction. Your experience will differ from that of other passengers depending on your travel class.
Let’s take a quick look at the baggage allowance for each travel class.
- Economy Special – Allows one piece of luggage weighing 23 kg (50 lbs) max.
- Economy Saver, Flex, and Flex Plus – Allows two pieces each weighing 23 kg (50 lbs).
- Premium Economy – Allows two checked bags of 23 kg (50 lbs) each.
- Business Class – Allows two pieces each 32 kg (70 lbs).
- First Class – Allows two pieces of baggage weighing 32 kg (70 lbs) each.
If you are flying between Europe and the US or within the Americas, the baggage allowance per class is the same as what we’ve covered above.
The total size of each checked bag has to be 150 cm (59 inches) at most. If your bag is bigger than the allowable size, you’ll pay an additional baggage fee as long as it doesn’t exceed 300 cm (118 inches). Bags that are larger than 300 cm (118 inches) will only count as cargo or freight.
Carry-On Baggage Allowances

You can also carry luggage into the cabin of the plane. However, there are rules for carry-on luggage that you’ll need to adhere to to ensure you have a smooth and satisfying experience. The specifics of the total weight and size could vary depending on your travel class and Emirates Skywards membership.
Here’s a summary of the Emirates sizes and weight limits of carry-on baggage.
- Economy Class
You can have one carry-on item measuring 55 x 38 x 20 cm (22 x 15 x 8 inches) and weighing 7 kg (15 lbs). The piece must fit in the overhead locker in the cabin or below the seat in front of you.
- Premium Economy
Also allows one carry-on piece with a size of 55 x 38 x 20 cm (22 x 15 x 8 inches). The bag must not be heavier than 10 kg (22 lbs ).
- First Class and Business Class
Passengers flying in First Class or Business Class can carry two items in the cabin. You can have a briefcase measuring 45 x 35 x 20 cm (18 x 14 x 8 inches) and another item. The additional piece could be a handbag or garment bag. The handbag should measure 55 x 38 x 20 cm (22 x 15 x 8 inches) and the garment bag should be 20 cm (8 inches) thick when folded. Each piece should be 7 kg (15 lbs.) at most.
Carry-On Exceptions
If you are traveling with an infant, you can take a collapsible stroller or carry-cot in addition to your carry-on item. However, this will depend on whether there’s spare space in the cabin. If there isn’t, you’ll have to carry the item as checked luggage.
Another exception is when you have oversized hand baggage that is extremely valuable or fragile. Such items will need to be approved during security screening before passengers carry them into the cabin. You can carry reasonable quantities of duty-free purchases like liquor, perfume, and cigarettes.
Any liquids you want to bring on board will need to meet some requirements to ensure they adhere to international regulations. Items such as drinks, lotions, creams, gels, aerosols, and others must be packed in a container of 100 ml max. Containers larger than this capacity won’t be allowed into the cabin even if partly full.
Additionally, you’ll need to transport the container inside a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag. The bag will undergo a visual examination to ensure it meets all security guidelines before you board the plane.
There is also an exception for baby milk, prescription medicines, and dietary requirements. Of course, you’ll need to show evidence that can corroborate the nature of these items.
Check out more restrictions and exceptions for liquids, aerosols, and gels in different regions in the table below.
Region | Liquid Restrictions | STEBs Accepted | Exceptions |
Africa | Egypt Kenya Mauritius Nigeria South Africa Tanzania Uganda | South Africa | No liquids are allowed for passengers transiting through Mauritius. Special Baggage Allowances

Some situations allow passengers to enjoy extra luggage allowance without charges. We’ll discuss them in this section.
1. Passengers with Disabilities
Passengers that use wheelchairs get an additional baggage allowance for a fully collapsible wheelchair which they can check into the plane. Those who use crutches or braces can also check them in without excess baggage charges.
If you require the use of a portable dialysis machine, you can check one in along with the attendant equipment. Unfortunately, you can’t have a portable dialysis machine in the cabin unless you are on Emirates flights on US routes. This is because there are restrictions for hazardous materials that restrict the carriage of dialysis machines using cabin baggage allowances.
Passengers with visual and hearing impairments can come with assistant dogs but they can’t stay in the cabin. Instead, the pets must stay in a kennel and be transported in the cargo hold.
If you have a sleep disorder, you are allowed one apnea device. You can check CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) or PAP (Positive Airway Pressure) devices before your flight.
2. Traveling with Infants
Passengers traveling with infants are subject to a different baggage policy depending on the travel route. Only babies under two years count as infants during Emirates flights. You can have a cabin bag that meets the provided baggage dimensions for your infant but it’ll have to weigh 5 kg (11 lbs) at most.
If you feel that remembering all the baggage requirements for you and your infant, don’t worry. This information will also be available on the tickets.
If there’s extra room in the cabin, you can carry one of the following items for your infants at no extra charge:
- Fully collapsible stroller
- Infant’s portable bassinet
- Infant’s car seat
3. Carrying Sports Equipment
You are allowed to travel with sports equipment via Emirates. There are items that have special packaging rules but generally, sports equipment is allowed as checked luggage. If the equipment is larger than 300 cm (118 inches) in total dimensions, it has to be transported as cargo.
In situations where the total weight of your items or number of bags goes beyond allowable baggage rules, they will be subject to excess baggage rates. You can learn how to purchase extra baggage allowance without hassle.
Sporting firearms and ammunition can be carried as checked luggage. You’ll need to unload and even dismantle the firearms, if possible before they are packed inside a gun case or suitcase. You must have the firearms and ammunition approved three days before your flight. The total weight of your ammunition should be 5 kg (11 lbs.) at most.
If you want to carry sporting firearms or ammunition into the UAE, you’ll need to be cleared by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defense and UAE Customs in advance. You’ll need to get in touch with these departments directly.
4. Traveling with Pets
Unfortunately, Emirates doesn’t allow the transportation of pets inside the plane’s cabin. The only exception is for falcons on specific flight routes from Dubai to Pakistan. Your pet can be transported as checked baggage or cargo in the aircraft’s hold. The size of the kennel and the total weight of your pet and the cage will determine the charges.
Even if you don’t have any checked luggage, you’ll have to pay the airline baggage fees for pets. Check out the table below for more details.
Animal and Cage | Price |
When the animal and cage combined do not exceed 23 kg and 59 inches (150 cm) | USD 500 |
When the animal and cage combined weight between 24 and 32 kg and dimensions between 59 inches (150cm) and 118 inches (300cm) | USD 650 |
When the animal and cage combined weight of over 32 kg and dimensions between 59 inches (150cm) and 118 inches (300cm) | USD 800 |
When the dimensions of the kennel exceed 118 inches (300cm) | Cargo |
5. Musical Instruments
Unfortunately, you won’t get a free baggage allowance for traveling with musical instruments using Emirates. As a result, you can only carry musical instruments as checked or cabin baggage as long as they adhere to size and weight limitations. Alternatively, you can pay for an extra seat for transporting your musical instrument.
Reach out to Emirates to find out more about traveling with a musical instrument before you book your flight.
