Carry-On Luggage Allowances

Related: TUI Airways Sizes: Luggage, Seats…

Air Canada’s carry-on baggage allowance is one of the most convenient among airlines in North America. You are allowed to carry one standard article and personal item during domestic and international flights.

There aren’t any weight restrictions when it comes to carry-on luggage on Air Canada. However, you still need to ensure that your carry-on is light enough to sit in the overhead locker without hassle.

The recommended H x L x W dimensions for your standard article are 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.5 x  15.5 x 9 inches). The wheels and handles of your bag must fit within the provided size to qualify as carry-on luggage. You can also have a personal item that measures 33 x 43 x 16 cm (13 x 17 x 6 inches). There are several items that could easily fit these dimensions allowing you to bring them as a personal article.

These items include:

  • Handbag
  • Roller bag
  • Backpack
  • Briefcase
  • Laptop
  • Small pet carrier
  • Airport shopping
  • Camera bag
  • Garment bag

Whichever item you choose as your carry-on will need to fit under the seat in front of you. To avoid carrying something that isn’t allowed on the plane, check out Air Canada’s list of Restricted and Prohibited items.

The airline also introduced automatic sizers for carry-on luggage that work much faster than traditional metal sizers. Any bags that don’t fit within the set recommendations will be taken as checked luggage and may be subject to additional baggage fees depending on how many bags you bring.

The only situation where you can carry two baggage items on board is if you are a member of Star Alliance Gold. Additionally, you’ll need to be traveling across multiple member carriers.

There are items that you can bring in addition to your carry-on bag without going against the Airline’s carry-on policy.

Such items include:

  • A coat or similar outerwear
  • A tiny purse no larger than 25cm x 30cm x 14cm (10in x 12in x 5.5 in)
  • A diaper bag or similar item for infant care
  • A collapsible stroller measuring 92 cm (36 in) in length and 25.5 cm (10 in) in diameter
  • Food and snacks that are wrapped or inside a container
  • Smoking accessories

Checked Baggage Allowances

Related: Etihad Airways Sizes: Luggage Allowances, Seats…

The amount of checked luggage you can bring depends on your travel route, travel class, and fare. Air Canada provides a checked bag calculator that quickly determines what you can freely check and any additional fees you will incur.

Usually, you are allowed a single checked bag for domestic flights and flights from Canada/US to Europe except if you use Economy Basic tickets. The maximum weight of each checked bag is 23 kg (50 lbs.) and the total dimensions of the bag (length + width + height) should not exceed 158 cm (62 inches).

If your luggage exceeds your checked baggage allowance, you’ll have to pay additional baggage charges. You should get to the airport about two hours earlier than recommended if you have extra bags or oversized luggage.

Bags that are heavier than 32 kg (70 lbs.), larger than 292 cm (115 in), or longer than 203 cm (80 in) will be transported as cargo.

Special Baggage Policies

Related: Aeroméxico Sizes: Luggage, Seats…

There are some items that don’t share the same limitations as standard carry-on or checked baggage. We’ll discuss them in this section.

1. Liquids and Gels

When using Air Canada for your travels, we recommend you only buy liquids after your luggage has passed through security screening. Any liquid or gel you want to take inside your carry-on bag will have to be in a 100 ml/100g (3.4oz) container. Anything larger than this will be confiscated during security checks.

Unfortunately, you aren’t allowed to drink your own alcoholic beverages on the plane. If your travel involves a connecting flight, you need to ensure you can access your checked luggage in between flights before buying liquids in containers larger than 100ml.

Additionally, you also need to have extra room inside your checked bag where you can place the container before the next flight.

2. Electronic Devices

You can also carry electronic devices into the cabin. However, these items are subject to restricted use.

Examples of these devices include:

  • Smartphones, tablets, iPads, and other handheld wireless devices
  • Bluetooth headsets
  • Noise-canceling devices
  • Video cameras
  • Portable games
  • Radio receivers
  • Satellite receivers

There are some electronics that have to be transported in your checked luggage because you can’t use them on board.

Such items include:

  • Printers
  • Laser pointers
  • Computer peripheral devices
  • Radio transmitters and similar equipment

3. Medication

If you have a medical prescription, you should carry your medicine inside your carry-on bag during all your flights. This ensures that passengers with chronic conditions and allergies aren’t without help in case of a medical emergency.

In some situations, you might need to keep your medication cool. As such, you are allowed to have a small cooler to refrigerate your medication. The cabin crew can provide extra ice if you need it.

You can carry any of the following in addition to your carry-on allowance:

  • A container with life-sustaining, medical items
  • Mobility aids or special needs items
  • Medication in its original container
  • Insulin
  • Epipens

4. Cannabis (Marijuana)

Since cannabis is legal in Canada, you are probably wondering whether you can carry it during your flights. You may carry medical marijuana during domestic flights within Canada only. Plus, you’ll need to show medical documentation to airport authorities during security screening.

As such, you should arrive at the airport earlier than the recommended time to ensure there’s enough time for your documents to be verified.

Flying cannabis to other countries from Canada is absolutely illegal even with a medical prescription. Learn more about cannabis restrictions here

5. Cremated Remains

You are allowed to carry cremated remains in addition to your carry-on luggage. The remains have to be packaged inside a wooden or cardboard box or a non-metallic urn. The packaging material should not prevent security screening at the airport check-in.

You don’t need a death certificate or certificate of cremation to carry ashes using Air Canada. However, you must have appropriate documentation during international flights that pass through other countries or regions.

6. Wedding Dresses

You can also bring a wedding dress to the cabin as long as it is inside a garment bag that meets the size recommendations. The dress will be transported inside the overhead bin but you should know that it could get wrinkled, torn, or damaged as items shift during the flight.

7. Sports Equipment

Traveling with sports equipment is simpler with Air Canada. However, there are some restrictions. If you plan to travel with sports equipment, check out this post for more information on packing instructions, charges, and more.

8. Musical Instruments

It’s important to loosen the strings of stringed musical instruments because changes in the atmosphere can cause them to snap during the flight. You also need to ensure the instrument is inside a hard casing designed for transporting musical instruments.

As long as the instrument adheres to carry-on size limitations, you can bring it into the cabin during your flight. This means that it’ll have to stay inside the overhead bin or below the seat ahead of you.

Alternatively, you can purchase an extra seat for transporting your musical instrument. Fortunately, you get a 50% discount on fare when purchasing a seat for your instrument. This ensures it stays in the same cabin you are traveling in during the flight.

You can only buy a seat if your instrument weighs 36 kg (80 lbs.) and measures 162.5 cm (64 in.). If the instrument exceeds these limits, you’ll have to carry it as checked luggage. However, stringed instruments like violins, guitars, and violas can be transported in the cabin even if they slightly exceed the size limits.

If you will check your musical instrument onto the plane, it only counts as a single piece. So, depending on the number of checked bags your fare type provides, you might have to pay additional checked baggage fees. Ensure the musical instrument is stored inside a rigid case to ensure it won’t be damaged when transported in the cargo bay.

Traveling with Children

Related: KLM Sizes: Luggage Allowance, Seats…

Those traveling with infants are allowed to carry an extra standard article for their baby’s belongings. When traveling in Economy Class, passengers with infants can book a bassinet in advance by getting in touch with Air Canada Reservations. Unfortunately, you won’t know if you can get one until the time your flight is leaving.

Bassinets are assigned to passengers that arrive first and are limited in number. Additionally, only the following aircraft offer bassinets for passengers with infants.

  • Boeing 787-9 (789)
  • Boeing 787-8 (788)
  • Boeing 777-300ER (77W)
  • Boeing 777-200LR (77L)
  • Airbus A330 (333)

Infants that qualify for bassinets are those that weigh lighter than 12 kg (25 lb) and can’t sit upright. Installing the bassinet is the responsibility of the flight attendants and will be done after the seat belt sign is off. The bassinets can only be installed on bulkhead rows.

In addition to your checked and carry-on luggage allowances, you can bring a stroller for your infant. The best stroller type for flights is the collapsible one with an umbrella design. The maximum length and diameter of the collapsed stroller must be 92 cm and 25.5 cm (36 in and 10 in) respectively.

You can also use child restraint devices for the additional safety of your infant. Check out more information about Child Restraint Devices here

Pet Travel Policy

Related: Air France Sizes: Luggage, Seats…

You can bring your pet with you provided it’s small enough to move about comfortably inside the carrier. There are situations that can prevent you from traveling with your pet in the cabin such as:

  • Being an unaccompanied minor
  • Seating in bulkhead or exit seats
  • Traveling in Premium Economy

Any flights to and from Hawaii won’t accept pets in the cabin or hold. As such, you’ll need to make separate arrangements to get your pet to your destination.

While you can bring your pet carrier as your carry-on item, your pet must remain inside throughout the flight. If your pet seems too small for the carrier, travel could be restricted. You should ensure the dimensions of the kennel are within the limits provided in the table below.

Maximum carrier size allowedHard-sided2
Height: 23 cm (9 in)
Width: 40 cm (15.5 in)
Length: 55 cm (21.5 in)
Soft-sided2
Height: 27 cm (10.5 in)
Width: 40 cm (15.5 in)
Length: 55 cm (21.5 in)

If the carrier is larger than the dimensions above, your pet can be transported as checked baggage. However, this only applies if the kennel’s total dimensions are under 292 cm (115 in) and the combined weight is 45 kg (100 lb) at most.

There are some aircraft that have different size requirements for pet carriers. Check out the details in the table below.

Passengers with Disabilities

Related: American Airlines Sizes: Luggage, Seats…

Any passengers that rely on mobility aids and similar assistive devices are allowed to carry them on board free of charge. However, this will depend on whether they can fit inside the cabin. In case the mobility aids don’t fit inside the cabin, they will be checked as luggage at no additional cost.

If your mobility aid has to be carried in the cargo, it’ll have to be small enough to fit through the cargo doors. Here’s an overview of the different sizes of cargo doors available on Air Canada. This will help you identify the best aircraft to travel in without hassle.
