KLM Travel Allowances

There’s a lot to keep in mind before you pack your bags and head out for your flight. In this section, we’ll discuss your luggage allowance and traveling with kids and pets.
1. Traveling with Luggage
When it comes to baggage allowance, there is carry-on and check-in baggage. Each of these has its weight and size limits and you’ll need to know them before you take your entire closet with you. Let’s look at them in detail below.
Carry-On/Hand Baggage Allowance
The ideal sizes for your handbag or carry-on luggage are different for every travel class.
- Economy Class
If you choose Economy Class you are allowed to carry a handbag with a maximum size of 55 x 35 x 25 cm. You can also carry one accessory with you as long as it doesn’t exceed 40 x 30 x 15 cm. This size is suitable for an item like a laptop or small handbag. The total weight of your hand baggage should be 12 kg at most.
- Premium Comfort Class
This travel class allows you two hand baggage items. The largest size of each item should be 55 x 35 x 25 cm. You are also allowed to take an accessory measuring a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 15 cm. The combined weight limit of your hand baggage is 18 kg.
- Business Class
Similar to your baggage allowance in Premium Comfort Class, you can bring two hand baggage. Even the handles and wheels of each item should be within the recommended size which is 55 x 35 x 25 cm. Additionally, the total weight of the items should not exceed 18 kg.
Note: If you are traveling with a child who will sit on your lap, you can only carry one hand baggage measuring 55 x 35 x 25 cm. The total weight of your hand baggage in this case is 12 kg.
Checked Baggage Allowance
Now, let’s review how many checked bags you can carry, the ideal sizes, and the weight limits.
- Economy Class
Your flight destination and the type of ticket you have will determine how many checked bags you can take with you. A Light ticket doesn’t come with a checked bag allowance. If it’s important to carry luggage, you’ll want to take a Standard or Flex ticket because these tickets will allow you to carry one checked bag.
You can calculate the total size of your bag by adding the height, length, and width dimensions. The total size should not exceed 158 cm and the weight limit is 23 kg.
- Premium Comfort Class
You can take two checked bags in Premium Comfort Class, each with a size of 158 cm and a weight limit of 23 kg.
- Business Class
The allowance for flying Business Class is the same as Premium Comfort. The size of each of the two bags you can carry should be 158 cm at most and the weight should not exceed 23 kg.
Note: If you have a baby on your lap, you are allowed to carry one checked item for them as long as it doesn’t exceed 10 kg in weight.
2. Traveling with Special Baggage
Sometimes, you could be traveling with items that aren’t regular check-in or carry-on luggage. These items could be anything from sports equipment to musical instruments. In this case, you’ll need to know the following guidelines.
- Sports Equipment
There are some sports items that require a reservation if you plan to carry them on your flight. Check out the requirements for different sports equipment right here. This will help you know whether you’ll be paying extra fees to transport your items as you travel.
- Extra Items for Kids
If you need to carry extra items like strollers, back carriers, buggies, car seats, in-flight beds, or leg extensions in addition to your kid’s bag, you can. Some of the items might require a reservation so be sure to check before you head over to the airport.
- Musical Instruments
A musical instrument can count as a hand baggage item if it meets the size and weight allowances. If it’s larger and heavier, you can alternatively book an extra seat for it. You don’t need to make reservations for musical instruments in this case.
Instruments heavier than 45 kg require an extra seat for transportation. Your musical instrument should not exceed a height of 140 cm. This allowance is even smaller, 122 cm, in European flights using Embraer planes.
You also have the option of taking your instrument as your checked luggage. If it is bigger than 300 cm and between 32 and 45 kg in weight, you should make a reservation early enough. If the instrument is heavier than 45 kg, you’ll need to look for another way to transport it to where you are going.
- Wedding Dresses
Your wedding dress can come in place of your checked bag. You can also bring it in place of your hand baggage item during intercontinental flights provided there is sufficient storage space. The packaging of your wedding dress should meet the size and weight limitations.
- Urns
If you are transporting a loved one’s ashes, you can carry an urn as your checked or hand baggage. You need to contact the airport in advance and ensure the urn is not metallic. The urn should be wrapped in a way that other passengers won’t be able to identify it and you’ll need a crematorium certificate at the security check-in at the airport.
3. Traveling with Pets
The only pets you can carry on KLM Airlines are cats and dogs. Your pet will have to be a minimum of 15 weeks old to be allowed to travel. Economy and Business travel classes are the only ones that allow you to travel with a pet in the cabin as long as it’s within Europe.
The correct size of your pet’s kennel is 46 x 28 x 24 cm because it’ll have to fit under the seat immediately ahead of you. The total weight of your pet and the kennel shouldn’t exceed 8 kg. Your pet will need to stay inside the kennel for the entire flight so you should ensure they are comfortable.
Intercontinental flights on Business and Premium Comfort travel classes don’t allow pets in the cabin. Unlike cabin travel, you can bring a maximum of 3 pets to the hold. You can have them in the same kennel if each of them isn’t heavier than 14 kg.
The total weight of your kennel and pet(s) in the hold should be under 75 kg. This makes it an ideal way to travel with a big pet. The maximum size of the kennel is 122 x 81 x 89 cm.
