How to choose the right rubber band

Natural rubber, which is more elastic than synthetic rubber, is used to make most rubber bands. When rubber bands are on the bigger side, we frequently used elastomers in their construction.

What Other Factors Should I Consider When Buying Rubber Bands?

When selecting a rubber band, there are more aspects to consider besides the length and breadth parameters.
- The Highest Elongation—the rubber band can be stretched before snapping. If the rubber band can stretch to multiples of its original size before the walls thin down, it has a greater ultimate elongation value.
- Permanent Set—When the rubber band is stretched to its maximum elongation and then returned to its natural, un-stretched form, how much longer will it be? A rubber band will stretch to a length that is significantly more than its initial length if the permanent set figure is higher.
- Specific Gravity—a ratio that compares the rubber band’s density to the density of water. A lower specific gravity value can show that the rubber band is of higher quality and contains fewer fillers.
- Durometer—a measurement of a material’s hardness, such as rubber or plastic. The harder and less snap-resistant anything gets, the higher the durometer number is.
How should someone who wants to use rubber bands for simple arts and crafts projects interpret these numbers? They won’t help much—just when you require rubber bands for industrial use. However, if you use rubber bands to bind bulkier objects together, pay attention to the ultimate elongation rating.
Does Rubber Band Size Matter?

The size of a rubber band only matters when you wish to use it to arrange big objects, like using rubber bands to close a laptop or keep books together.
For illustration, contrast rubber bands in Sterling Sizes 117A and 32. Both of them use the same components and have the same proportion of fillers as rubber. They have the same maximum elongation rating of 750%.
According to the sizing table above, a Size 117A rubber band has a maximum stretch of 750% over 7 inches, or up to 52.5 inches, compared to the maximum stretch of merely 22.5 inches for size 32 rubber bands. The largest object that a size 32 rubber band can secure may be a double-coil around a Size 117A rubber band.
But with securing smaller objects, the fewer times you have to loop a rubber band, the easier it will be to unloop from the object later. For this reason, size 32 rubber bands are preferable over Size 117A in these circumstances.
