Truck Tire Size Chart And Sizing Guide
Tires are typically constructed of tough rubbers wrapped around a metallic rim and filled with pressurized air. They come in a range of sizes, and a truck tire size chart can assist you in determining the appropriate size for your vehicle. A good-sized truck tire will improve safety, performance and grip during the long rides.
The tires are the most vital portions of the car that touch the ground; they are designed to hold the vehicle’s total weight as part of the wheel. Tires are also designed to absorb shocks and vibrations and transmit traction controls, speed, and braking forces. They also change the motion’s direction.

How to Read a Truck Tire Size
Tires are measured using two different systems: metric and flotation. The metric system, which is most common tire measurement type. It is an alphanumeric tire code, made up of a sequence of letters and numbers, and each number and letter on a tire is significant and relates to the tire’s size, kind, design, or special features. This section will show you how to read the information on tires.
Here is an example of a metric tire size: P205/65R16
The First Letter: The first letter indicates the class of tire. There are four classes of tires in general, and this should not be confused with the tire type.
- P metric tire: This denotes that the tire was created with passenger vehicles in mind. A passenger vehicle may be a minivan, tiny pickup truck, sedan, SUV, or a car
- LT: LT means light truck tire. This indicates that the tire was created for light trucks, vehicles built to transport medium loads.
- ST: “Special trailers” is abbreviated as ST. It is used to identify tires designed to carry heavy loads. Heavy-duty cars, utility trailers, and boat trailers all require tires of this classification.
- T: This is the designation for temporary tires or a replacement tire that should not be driven faster than 50 mph and should only be used when driving up to a garage stop. Cheaper tires usually carry this code.
If this letter is missing, the tire is almost certainly a passenger tire.
The three-digit number: The 3-digit number following the first letter represents the tire width. It (205) specifies the width of the tire in millimeters from sidewall height to the tire sidewall as viewed from the front.
The Two-digit Number: The following number represents the aspect ratio or tire profile size. lower aspect ratio tires offer better performance and average traction than higher aspect ratio tires.
The Next Letter: The following letter denotes the type of tire construction. The following are the four different tire construction type:
- R: A tire with an R rating is a radial tire. at least 98% of all manufactured tires are radial tires.
- D: This is an abbreviation for diagonal ply or bias-ply
- B: This means belt constructions
- F: F means that it is a run-flat tire
The last number: The last number on the metric measurements of tire stands for the tire diameter.
Other important information to check on a tire include:
- The tire speed ratings/speed rating
- The maximum speed capability
- Maximum load capability
- The alternate tire sizes
- Tire load
- Tire manufacturers
- Rim diameter
- Rim size
- Tread design

what is the difference between P225R20 225R20
Hello Jack, thanks for reaching out. “P” just means that they are tires meant for passenger cars. Euro-metric and P-metric tires of the same size (i.e. P225/60R20 & 225/60R20) are equivalent in their dimensions with slight differences in their load capacity calculations and inflation pressure tables.Hope this helped. Have a nice day !
Hi
Can you replace a 10R17.5 woth a 235/75r17.5
Hi Hans, It is generally not recommended to replace a tire with a tire that has a significantly different size than the original equipment tire.It is technically possible to replace a 10R17.5 tire with a 235/75R17.5 tire. However, it is essential to note that the 235/75R17.5 tire is a slightly different size than the 10R17.5 tire, and this may affect the performance and handling of the vehicle. Check your vehicles manual before replacing the tire. All the best, Pablo
