FAQ: Kids’ shoes Sizing and Children’s foot size?
We all know kids’ feet grow fast! When your children are under the age of 2, it’s a good plan to measure their feet every 3-5 months. Note that under the age of 2 the shoes are mostly needed for outside activities.
Here’s how children’s shoe size increased from time to time.
– 0 to 12 months: 1⁄2 size increase every 2 months
– 1 –2 years: 1⁄2 size increase every 3 months
– 2-5 years: 1⁄2 size increase every 4 months
Note: sizes and feet measurements differ by brands and by type of feet of your children.
According to international statistics, children’s feet grow approximately 1 inch or 2.5 centimeters per year from newborn till the age of 2 years. Between 2 and 6 years, your children’s feet tend to grow typically around 0.75 to 1 centimeters, or 0.3 to 0.4 inches, per year.
From the age of 7-14 years, the feet grow around 0.5 centimeters or 0.2 inches a year.
Start looking for new shoes when your child’s shoes leave less than 0.5 inches (12 mm) of space for the feet. However, new shoes, should leave at least 3/4 inch (17 mm) of free space for the feet to grow.
Checking the size of the shoes you have purchased or about to purchase is an important step in the fitting process. A common action is the “toe test,” where parents squeeze the shoe tip to check out if the baby’s and children’s toes have space. Many Children curl their toes, with incorrect readings as a consequence.
Place your hand on the front of the shoe instead (like this your kids’ toes can’t bend) and test the room at the back to know if your child’s foot has enough space to expand. It’s best to buy a shoe with a small gap between the heel and the back of the shoe.
This may vary from gender to gender, from region to region.
– Boys: Foot development usually ends at 15 years of age.
– Girls: Foot development normally ends until they are thirteen years old.
Until babies start walking there’s no need for them to wear shoes. Socks or house slippers are just fine. We have a dedicated post about the perfect shoes for babies and toddlers.
When learning to walk the shoes should provide enough space for the rolling of the foot. Therefore the shoes must be at least 0.5 inches to 3/4 inch longer than the foot. The shoes must be flexible, have a non-slip outsole, and have good air circulation.
Kids feet grow fast (as seen above up to 2 sizes per year), and there’s no difference in gender. Boys’ and girls’ feet grow at the same pace. A six-year-old will averagely have between US size 12.5Y and 13.5Y, UK size 12 to 13, and European shoe size 29.5-30.5.
First of all, shoes in children sizes are cheaper than adults sized shoes. Secondly, youth sizes come unisex (no difference between boys’ or girls’ shoes)
No, there’s no difference between boys’ and girls’ shoes. You can convert children’s shoes sizes without paying attention if you’re looking for a boy or a girl.
