How to choose your ski helmet size
How do I know my helmet size for skiing?
Step 1: Measure your head
Use a measuring tape to measure around your head one inch above your eyebrows. Or use a string to measure and then lay it out and measure the length of the string.
Step 2: Choose your size
Use the chart to convert the measurement to your helmet size
Step 3: Fit your Helmet
Fit the helmet model you would like to purchase. The helmet should have a snug-but-comfortable fit and should sit within the width of one or two fingers above your brow. A helmet that sits low on your eyebrows is too big. Shake your head with the ski helmet on: if it moves around, it’s too big. Instead of shaking your head you can also grab the helmet with your both hands and try to move it back and forth.
Step 4: Buckle the Chin Strap
This strap should hold the helmet in place without discomfort.
A too big ski helmet is not safe! Don’t buy ski helmets to grow into!
Ski Helmet size and measurement explained
Types of Ski Helmets
There are two types of ski helmets:
- Half Shell
- Full Shell
Half Shell
Half Shell helmets are the most popular, with soft ear pad protection (in the case of winter helmets) into standard helmet design. This allows for a more comfortable fit and better hearing.
Full Shell
Full Shell helmets provide complete protection to all elements. Racers wear full shell helmets.
Kid’s ski helmets are often full shell. The full shell helmet provides full ear coverage that can help increase protection to the side of the head and ears.
