To repeat ourselves: your belt size is not the same as your pants size, nor your waist size.
The most accurate way to determine your belt size is actually to measure your waist using a tape measure. Measure the hip area where your belt usually sits.
The easiest way to determine belt size for men is simply “add 2″ to your off-the-rack trouser size.
If you wear a 34” waist trouser, then a 36 belt size will do the job. When you’re used to wearing your pants on traditional height–close to the natural waistline; this simple formula will work.
If you have an existing belt, but you can’t determine the size anymore, measure it correctly to see the right size.

US Belt Size to European Belt size conversion chart

International Belt Size Charts FAQ
A European belt size 90 is the same as a US 36 size belt. Generally it’s a Medium or M sized international belt size.
This is a system of Dual Sized Belts Size charts. Some Global belt brands that sell to customers in both the US and Europe tend to note sizes in both measurements using a slash between the numbers. For example, a belt with the size 46/115 will fit a person who needs a 46 inch or 115 centimeter belt, or 2XL or XXL sized belt.
The European method of belt sizing is also used in the UK (and Japan)
The correct belt size is important for many reasons. From aesthetical point of view, the belt and pants can’t be too long. In addition, a belt must be comfortable and easy to strap, it should not be too short.

How to measure your Belt Size in 4 easy steps
- Measure your waist or the place you plan to wear the belt
The best way is to measure around where you wear the belt.
- Use a Measuring tape on top of your clothes
On the desired place where you plan to wear the belt, go around your waist with a simple measuring tape. When You measure in Inches, If it is an odd number, round up to the next even number.
- Measure an existing belt you’re wearing
Alternatively, you can measure at the fold, or where the buckle and the leather starts, to the hole that you currently use. Note that belt sizes always work to the middle hole of 5 holes. Do not include the buckle length in your measurement. When You measure in Inches, If it is an odd number, round up to the next even number. Don’t measure the length from end to end. You will not get the correct size that way.
- Convert the waist size measurement into the desired international Belt Size
The waist size is not the same as the belt size. Check above Waist size to EU belt size to US belt size conversion chart to get the correct size. When measuring in inches, go 2 inches up as a rule of thumb.
General Belt Information
Over time, leather belts tend to stretch. Braided belts or belts made out of synthetic or Vegan leathers even more so. It’s good to keep in mind that a belt that feels a little tight initially will likely wear more comfortably over time.
